Currency, Payments, & Connectivity in Tibet

Managing money, payments, and digital connectivity in Tibet follows the systems used across mainland China, with unique considerations for high-altitude, remote travel.

Currency & Cash

  • Official Currency: The legal currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY / RMB), commonly called Kuai. Foreign currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, NPR) are not accepted for everyday transactions.

  • Cash is Essential for Remote Areas: While Lhasa and Shigatse are heavily digitized, physical cash remains vital once you venture into western Tibet, rural villages, or high-altitude stops like Everest Base Camp, Namtso Lake, and Mount Kailash, where cellular connections can fluctuate.

  • ATMs & Currency Exchange:

    • ATMs belonging to major state banks (Bank of China, ICBC, China Construction Bank) in Lhasa and Shigatse accept foreign Visa and Mastercard for cash withdrawals in RMB.

    • Currency exchange counters are limited primarily to major Bank of China branches in downtown Lhasa. It is strongly advised to withdraw or exchange sufficient cash before departing Lhasa for overland journeys.

    • Carry small-denomination banknotes (¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50) for temple butter-lamp donations, public restrooms, and small purchases from local vendors.

Digital Payments (Alipay & WeChat Pay)

China operates largely as a cashless society via QR code payments. International travelers can use both major payment apps without needing a Chinese bank account:

  • Direct Card Binding: You can link your international credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover) directly to Alipay (International Version) and WeChat Pay.

  • Setup Before Departure: Download the apps, complete passport identity verification, and link your home card before traveling to avoid SMS verification issues or app store access hurdles after landing.

  • Transaction Fees: Transactions under 200 RMB incur no platform processing fee, while transactions over 200 RMB generally carry a 3% platform fee (plus any foreign transaction fees from your home card issuer).

  • Credit Card Acceptance: Direct swiping/tapping of foreign credit cards is limited to high-end 4- and 5-star international hotels in Lhasa. Most restaurants, cafes, and shops only take mobile QR payments or cash.

Mobile Connectivity, SIM Cards & eSIMs

Tibet features modern 4G and 5G cellular coverage along main highways, major cities, and scenic areas (including Everest Base Camp), though connectivity drops in remote mountain valleys and high passes.

  • Travel eSIMs (Recommended): An international travel eSIM (such as Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, or MobiMatter) allows instant data activation upon arrival. Most travel eSIMs route data via roaming agreements through Hong Kong or other international hubs, automatically bypassing local internet restrictions without requiring an extra app.

  • Physical SIM Cards: If purchasing a physical Chinese SIM card (China Mobile, China Telecom, or China Unicom), it is best to buy one at your mainland gateway airport (Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai) before arriving in Tibet. A passport is required for real-name registration.

  • Hotel Wi-Fi: Standard complimentary Wi-Fi is available across hotels and guesthouses in Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse.

Internet Access & VPNs

  • The Great Firewall: Standard Chinese mainland internet regulations apply in Tibet. Services such as Google (Maps, Gmail, Search), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and many Western news outlets are blocked on local networks.

  • Using a VPN: If relying on local Wi-Fi or a local physical SIM card, download and install a reliable paid VPN on all devices before arriving in China.

  • Pro-Tip for Payments: If a mobile payment fails in Alipay or WeChat Pay, temporarily disconnect your VPN. Payment apps may flag location mismatches between your foreign VPN server and local GPS coordinates as a security risk.
