Frequently asked questions

General Company Questions

What makes Far & High different from other tour operators?

Far & High Adventure Travel differentiates itself through deep regional specialization, native ground expertise, and an intimate, boutique approach to adventure and cultural exploration.

  • Deep Regional Roots and Native Expertise: Unlike mass-market global tour operators that subcontract across continents, Far & High's leadership, managers, and field staff possess lifelong connections and firsthand operational experience across the Himalayas and Asia (including Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, India, and Southeast Asia).

  • 100% Native, In-Country Guides: Instead of flying in Western tour leaders, they partner exclusively with local guides who grew up on the trails and in the communities you visit. This offers authentic cultural storytelling, keeps operational overhead fair, and directly supports the local economy.

  • Ultra-Small, Guaranteed Departures: Group sizes are kept intentionally small, typically under 10 travelers, and group departures are guaranteed with as few as two guests. This avoids large charter-bus dynamics, allows access to hidden areas, and preserves spontaneous exploration.

  • Custom-Tailored & Off-the-Beaten-Path Routing: Beyond iconic trekking trails and heritage sites, itineraries are tailored around lesser-visited regions, authentic village encounters, and regional festivals rather than rigid, cookie-cutter schedules.

  • Comprehensive Adventure Safety & Acclimatization: High-altitude treks and wilderness routes feature deliberate pacing and acclimatization schedules, accompanied by first-aid-certified crews, reliable equipment, and treated water standards.

Where is Far & High based?

Far & High Adventure Travel operates through a dual-presence model, bridging North American headquarters with native ground operations across Asia:

  • Headquarters (USA): Based in Farmington, Minnesota (within the Twin Cities metropolitan area), supporting clients across the US and Canada with remote travel advisors handling trip design, logistics, and planning.

  • Dedicated Operational Offices (Himalayas): Direct ground offices in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Thimphu, Bhutan, managing in-country field teams, logistics, and private departures.

  • Regional Partner Network (Southeast & East Asia): Across destinations such as India, Tibet, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Mongolia, operations are handled by vetted local partners and longtime professional associates who manage ground services, local guides, and transportation.

How long have you been operating tours in Asia and the Himalaya?

Far & High Adventure Travel has been curating and operating journeys across Asia and the Himalayas for over 27 years.

  • Decades of Ground Experience: The leadership and field teams began organizing treks, cultural tours, and high-altitude expeditions in the early 1990s, building extensive grassroots operational experience before expanding across South and Southeast Asia.

  • Established in Nepal (1998): The company was first founded in Kathmandu, Nepal, operating high-altitude treks, cultural expeditions, and Himalayan tours directly from the heart of the region.

  • Expanded to Minnesota, USA (2006): In 2006, Far & High established its North American headquarters in Minnesota to provide direct trip planning, consulting, and client support for travelers across the United States and Canada.

  • Decades of Native Ground Experience: Spanning nearly three decades, the company has built extensive local infrastructure, long-term partnerships, and dedicated operational teams across Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, India, and Southeast Asia.

  • Longstanding In-Country Networks: Over nearly three decades, the company has cultivated direct, long-term partnerships with local drivers, heritage guides, lodge operators, and community leaders across Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, India, and beyond.

  • Evolution of Itineraries: That background spans from the pioneering days of Himalayan trekking to modern, highly personalized private journeys and small-group cultural immersions.

Who are your local partners and guides?

Far & High Adventure Travel works exclusively with native guides and deeply established local operators who have lifelong connections to their regions.

  • Dedicated Field Teams (Nepal & Bhutan): Ground operations in Nepal and Bhutan are run directly through Far & High's own offices in Kathmandu and Thimphu. Guides include government-licensed cultural experts, veteran Himalayan trekking sirdars, and high-altitude wilderness specialists with decades of route experience and first-aid certification.

  • Former Colleagues & Longtime Partners (Southeast & South Asia): In destinations such as India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Mongolia, trips are operated by vetted local partners, former industry colleagues, and trusted associates who share the same boutique travel philosophy.

  • Officially Certified Tibetan Guides (Tibet): In compliance with regional travel regulations, all Tibet itineraries are handled by licensed, native Tibetan guides and drivers who specialize in Tibetan Buddhist heritage, monastery history, and high-altitude overland logistics.

  • 100% Native, Community-Rooted Staff: Rather than using Western tour leaders, every guide, driver, and logistics coordinator is a local resident, providing direct cultural insight, language fluency, and fair-wage support to regional economies.

What about licensing and industry affiliations?

Far & High Adventure Travel maintains professional industry memberships in North America and fully licensed, registered operational status across all destination countries.

(Note: Far & High does not operate extreme technical mountaineering, peak-climbing expeditions, or ultra-endurance adventures.)

How small are your small-group tours?

Far & High Adventure Travel keeps group sizes intentionally small to ensure an authentic, flexible, and immersive journey without the crowd dynamics of large tour buses.

  • Typical Group Size: 8 to 10 travelers on average, creating an intimate, conversational atmosphere where you can connect with fellow travelers and your local guide.

  • Guaranteed Minimum: Just 2 travelers. Departures are guaranteed with as few as two guests, so you don't have to worry about trips being canceled due to low enrollment.

  • Strict Maximum Cap: 16 travelers. Group size never exceeds 16, ensuring easy access to boutique heritage hotels, remote village homestays, and sacred monastery spaces that cannot accommodate large bus tours.

Can I customize an itinerary to fit my interests and schedule?

Yes, absolutely. Customizing private journeys to match your exact dates, interests, and preferred pacing is one of Far & High’s core specialties.

  • Flexible Dates & Duration: You choose your departure dates, trip length, and start/finish cities rather than conforming to a rigid group departure calendar.

  • Tailored Focus & Activities: Itineraries can be adapted around your specific passions, such as regional festival dates, Buddhist monastery visits, photography, village walks, textile arts, or gentle day hikes.

  • Custom Pacing & Acclimatization: You can adjust the daily tempo, adding rest days or scenic layovers to ensure comfortable acclimatization on high-altitude routes.

  • Accommodation & Transport Choices: Select your preferred standard of lodging (from charming boutique heritage hotels to premium resorts or luxury wilderness lodges) with private vehicles and dedicated drivers throughout.

  • Private Dedicated Guide: Travel with your own private native guide who tailors daily site visits and cultural interactions to your personal curiosities.

What level of physical fitness is required for your trips?

The required physical fitness depends on the specific trip style you choose, ranging from easy-to-moderate cultural journeys to physically demanding wilderness treks.

Because Far & High does not operate technical mountaineering or extreme climbing, all trips are accessible to travelers who select an itinerary matched to their activity level and prepare accordingly.

Cultural & Heritage Tours (Easy to Moderate)

  • Physical Demand: Low to moderate.

  • What to Expect: Motor vehicle-based exploration with 1 to 3 hours of daily walking across uneven cobblestones, temple steps, monastery stairs, and bustling markets.

  • Key Example: The iconic hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) in Bhutan involves a 4-to-6-hour round-trip walk with an elevation gain of roughly 1,700–2,000 ft, which can be done at a steady, relaxed pace.

  • Fitness Needed: General good health and the stamina for light day-to-day walking.

Walking & Soft-Adventure Tours (Moderate)

  • Physical Demand: Moderate.

  • What to Expect: Combination of scenic overland driving and daily 3-to-5-hour village, ridge, or nature walks on natural, unpaved trails with moderate ascents and descents.

  • Fitness Needed: Ability to comfortably walk 4–6 miles on rolling terrain. Regular aerobic exercise (walking, stair climbing, light jogging) beforehand is recommended.

Himalayan Trekking Trips (Moderate to Strenuous)

  • Physical Demand: Demanding, non-technical endurance.

  • What to Expect: 5 to 7 hours of daily hiking across rugged mountain trails, stone steps, and steep switchbacks while carrying a daypack (main luggage is transported by porters or pack animals). Itineraries include dedicated acclimatization rest days.

  • Fitness Needed: Good cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and stamina. Pre-trip training, such as regular hiking with elevation gain, stair training, and cardio workouts 2–3 months in advance, is strongly encouraged.

A Note on Altitude & Acclimatization

On trips visiting Tibet (averaging 11,500+ ft), Ladakh, or high Himalayan passes, the primary challenge is often altitude rather than physical exertion. Far & High itineraries are built with deliberate pacing, gradual ascent profiles, and hydration/rest protocols to help your body adapt naturally.

What is the typical age range of travelers on your group trips?

The typical age range of travelers on Far & High’s small-group trips is 40 to 70 years old, though the journeys welcome anyone in good health with a spirit of curiosity and adventure.

  • Core Demographic (40s to late 60s/70s): Most group travelers are active adults, mid-career professionals, empty nesters, and retirees who appreciate cultural depth, comfortable pacing, and authentic local encounters over rushed party tours or extreme endurance trials.

  • Shared Travel Mindset: Regardless of exact age, group members tend to share similar travel values, an appreciation for local heritage, respect for cultural traditions, enthusiasm for scenic walks and photography, and a preference for small, conversational groups.

  • Solo Travelers, Couples, & Friends: Group departures bring together a balanced mix of solo adventurers, couples, and friends traveling together.

  • Multi-Generational & Younger Travelers: While scheduled group departures naturally center around the 40–70 bracket, custom private tours frequently accommodate families with children, teens, and multi-generational groups of all ages.

Do you offer family‑friendly or senior‑friendly tour?

Yes, absolutely. Far & High Adventure Travel offers trips that are well-suited for families with children, active seniors, and multi-generational groups traveling together.

Because journeys emphasize cultural immersion, scenic road exploration, and soft adventure rather than extreme climbing, itineraries can be tailored to match the stamina, mobility, and interests of every generation.

Senior-Friendly Journeys

For mature travelers and retirees (who make up a significant portion of the core 40–70 demographic), the focus is on depth of experience without physical overextension:

  • Relaxed, Unhurried Pacing: Built-in rest days, multi-night stays at comfortable boutique heritage hotels, and flexible start times in the morning to prevent travel fatigue.

  • Gradual Acclimatization: High-altitude destinations (such as Tibet, Bhutan, or Ladakh) feature carefully planned ascent profiles and gradual elevation gains to ensure comfort and well-being.

  • Low-Impact Cultural Immersion: Activities center on temple architecture, Buddhist art, local village life, cooking demonstrations, and gentle, flat nature walks rather than steep, strenuous trekking.

  • Dedicated Ground Support: Private, comfortable transport with skilled drivers and attentive local guides who provide personal assistance with stairs, luggage, and route navigation.

Family-Friendly & Multi-Generational Trips

For families traveling with children, teens, or grandparents, custom private tours allow complete control over the daily routine:

  • Engaging, Hands-On Experiences: Interactive activities that keep younger travelers engaged, such as archery in Bhutan, wildlife safaris to spot rhinos and tigers in Chitwan (Nepal), traditional pottery-making workshops, or farm visits.

  • Flexible Schedules: Daily itineraries can be adjusted on the fly to allow for downtime, pool time, or spontaneous stops for snacks and scenic photo breaks.

  • Family-Appropriate Accommodations: Handpicked boutique hotels, family suites, interconnected rooms, and charming eco-resorts with open garden spaces.

  • Custom Walking & Hiking Routes: Trails and soft hikes are chosen to match children's energy levels or provide vehicle backup options if anyone prefers to skip a section of walking.

Best Formats for Families & Seniors

  • Custom Private Tours: The ideal choice, giving your family or group exclusive use of private vehicles and dedicated guides to set your own daily tempo.

  • Cultural & Heritage Small Groups: Active seniors often enjoy scheduled small group tours, where guaranteed departures and small group sizes (typically 8–10 people) ensure personalized care from the guide.

  • Meditation & Monastic Life: Opportunities for quiet reflection, butter lamp offerings, interacting with resident monks and nuns, and observing dawn/dusk prayer chants.

How do you choose your destinations and routes?

Far & High selects destinations and crafts routes through a hands-on, field-tested methodology developed over nearly three decades of operating on the ground in Asia and the Himalayas.

Rather than following mass-market tourist trends or relying on generic wholesale packages, route selection is guided by several core principles:

  1. Deep Regional Roots & Firsthand Exploration

    • Direct Field Experience: Every itinerary is designed and vetted by team leaders and local partners who have personally walked the trails, driven the highways, and built relationships with local communities.

    • On-the-Ground Vetting: Roads, mountain passes (such as Lawala Pass in Bhutan or high passes across the Tibetan plateau), local accommodations, and trail conditions are continually monitored and evaluated firsthand.

  1. Authentic Immersion & Off-the-Beaten-Path Routing

    • Balancing Icons with Hidden Gems: Routes weave together iconic UNESCO World Heritage landmarks with lesser-visited rural valleys, remote monastic settlements, and traditional artisan villages.

    • Cultural Timing & Living Heritage: Itineraries are frequently built around regional festival calendars (Tsechus, monastic prayer ceremonies, and rural cultural gatherings) to allow travelers to witness authentic living traditions.

  1. Thoughtful Pacing & High-Altitude Acclimatization

    • Smart Elevation Profiles: For high-altitude journeys across Tibet, Ladakh, and Himalayan trekking circuits, routes are structured with gradual ascents, built-in rest stops, and deliberate elevation staging to prioritize health and natural acclimatization.

    • No Rushed "Drive-By" Tourism: Multi-night stays in key locations minimize constant packing and unpacking, leaving ample room for spontaneous village walks, monastery visits, and photography.

  1. Soft Adventure Without Extreme Risk

    • Accessibility Over Technical Difficulty: Routes focus on immersive cultural discovery, day hiking, scenic overland travel, and classic trekking without requiring technical climbing gear, extreme mountaineering, or high-risk exposure.

    • Active, Engaging Exploration: Trails are chosen for travelers who enjoy being active on their feet, navigating stone stairs, ridge paths, and cobblestone alleys, while returning each evening to comfortable, welcoming lodges.

  1. Operational Agility & Route Flexibility

    • Adaptive Itinerary Design: Because Himalayan weather, mountain road conditions, and local festivals can shift, routes are designed with built-in flexibility. Local guides and ground offices have the autonomy to adjust daily timing or arrange alternative scenic routes to ensure a smooth, rewarding journey.

Guides & Local Expertise

Who leads your tours?

All Far & High Adventure Travel trips are led by certified, fluent English-speaking native local tour guides, trekking sirdars, and naturalists who were born and raised in the regions you visit.

Rather than flying in Western tour leaders, Far & High relies entirely on local ground leaders for several reasons:

  • Authentic Lived Experience: Because they grew up in these communities, local guides provide nuanced, personal storytelling about Buddhist traditions, local folklore, regional history, and daily village life that outsider tour leaders cannot match.

  • Certified Cultural & Wilderness Experts: Depending on the trip, leaders include:

    • Government-Licensed Cultural Guides: Specialists in temple architecture, Tibetan Buddhist iconography, dzong histories, and regional heritage sites.

    • Veteran Trekking Sirdars & Guides: High-altitude mountain specialists with extensive route experience, wilderness safety protocols, and acclimatization management.

    • Expert Naturalists & Trackers: On wildlife safaris (such as Chitwan or Bardia in Nepal, and Ranthambore in India), safaris are guided by professional local naturalists skilled in bird identification, animal behavior, and wildlife tracking.

  • Safety & First-Aid Certified: All tour guides and support crews receive formal training in wilderness first aid, altitude awareness, and emergency safety procedures.

  • Economic Support for Local Communities: Hiring local native guides, drivers, and porters directly sustains regional economies, ensures fair wages, and fosters authentic, positive connections between travelers and host communities.

Are your guides certified and trained in first aid?

Yes. All Far & High Adventure Travel guides and trek leaders are officially government-licensed, professionally certified, and trained in first aid and safety protocols.

  • First Aid & Wilderness Medical Training: Trekking sirdars, mountain guides, and field leaders receive formal training in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR. They carry comprehensive medical kits on trail and are trained to handle common trail injuries, gastrointestinal issues, and wilderness emergencies.

  • High-Altitude & AMS Management: For journeys in Tibet, Ladakh, Bhutan, and high-altitude Nepal, guides are specially trained to monitor, recognize, and manage Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). They carry portable pulse oximeters to track blood oxygen levels and heart rates daily.

  • Government Guiding Licenses: Every cultural guide and mountain leader holds mandatory official licensing from their respective national tourism boards (such as the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management/Department of Tourism in Nepal, the Department of Tourism in Bhutan, and the Tibet Tourism Bureau).

  • Emergency Response Protocols: Field teams maintain direct communication channels with our in-country operational offices in Kathmandu and Thimphu to coordinate swift emergency logistics, medical consultations, or helicopter evacuations if ever required.

Will my guide speak English?

Yes, absolutely. All Far & High tour leaders, cultural guides, and trekking sirdars speak English fluently and communicate clearly throughout your journey.

  • Cultural & Heritage Tour Guides: All cultural, historical, and city guides hold college-level degrees (often in history, culture, or tourism) alongside official government guiding credentials. They possess years of professional experience guiding international travelers in English, offering rich, articulate explanations of Buddhist philosophy, architecture, local politics, and regional heritage.

  • Trekking & Wilderness Guides: While veteran trekking guides and high-altitude sirdars may not always hold formal college degrees, they have extensive on-the-trail experience and speak English very well. They are skilled at communicating route details, daily briefings, weather conditions, safety instructions, and mountain lore clearly and effectively.

  • Open, Conversational Dynamic: Beyond logistical instructions, your guides are engaging travel companions who can converse comfortably, answer your curiosities about daily life and culture, and bridge the language gap when interacting with local villagers, shopkeepers, and monks along the way.

How experienced are your support staff and driver?

Far & High’s guides, trekking sirdars, and field support crews bring decades of combined, hands-on field experience and formal professional training to every departure.

Cultural & Heritage Guides

  • Education & Credentials: Hold college and university degrees (frequently in history, culture, Asian studies, or tourism management) and carry official government guiding licenses.

  • Guiding Track Record: Most have 10 to 20+ years of active field experience guiding international travelers, diplomats, and cultural groups across sacred temples, UNESCO sites, and regional festivals.

  • Deep Cultural Articulation: Beyond knowing dates and names, they excel at interpreting Buddhist iconography, regional philosophy, and contemporary local life in articulate, engaging English.

Trekking Sirdars & Mountain Guides

  • Extensive Route Experience: Sirdars (lead expedition guides) typically possess 15 to 25+ years of high-altitude Himalayan trail experience, having crossed high passes (such as Cho La, Thorong La, or Larkya La) dozens of times.

  • Wilderness & Altitude Proficiency: Formally trained in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, high-altitude pathology (AMS/HAPE/HACE), and emergency rescue logistics.

  • Trail Leadership: Highly skilled in reading mountain weather, managing daily pacing, monitoring oxygen saturation levels, and keeping morale high.

Support Crews, Drivers & Porters

  • Vetted Professional Drivers: Mountain and overland drivers are veteran navigators accustomed to narrow Himalayan switchbacks, lateral highways, and unpaved terrain, prioritizing passenger safety and vehicle maintenance.

  • Camp & Trekking Crew: Kitchen staff, sherpas, and porters are experienced, dedicated teams who work regularly with our ground offices.

  • Fair Treatment & Safety Standards: Far & High adheres to strict porter and staff welfare standards, providing fair wages, load limits, adequate mountain gear, and comprehensive medical/evacuation insurance for all support personnel.

Accommodation & Meals

What types of accommodations do you use?

Accommodations vary by destination and the style of trip, balancing comfort, authentic character, and community impact:

  • In major cities and main hubs: Mid-range to deluxe 4-star and 5-star properties, prioritizing locally owned boutique hotels and establishments wherever possible.

  • In remote or rural areas: The best available local lodges, heritage inns, or family-run guesthouses where options are limited.

  • On high-altitude mountain treks: Authentic, community-run tea houses and guesthouses, booking rooms with en suite private bathrooms whenever available.

  • In Mongolia: Traditional felt tent tourist ger (yurt) camps run by local operators, offering an authentic nomadic experience.

Can I upgrade or request my preferred accommodation?

It depends on the style of your trip:

  • On scheduled small group tours: No. Accommodations are pre-contracted at negotiated group rates and terms to ensure smooth logistics and fair pricing for the entire group, so individual hotel substitutions or upgrades are not possible.

  • On private and custom trips: Yes, absolutely. You have full flexibility to select specific properties, upgrade room categories, or request luxury heritage hotels and boutique resorts to match your personal travel preferences (subject to availability).

Do you offer a private single-room options?

Yes, private single rooms are available upon request with advance notice, subject to a Single Room Supplement:

  • Solo Travelers on Group Tours: If you are traveling solo and there is no roommate of the same gender available to share with, the single supplement is mandatory to guarantee your private room throughout the trip.

  • Preferred Privacy: If you simply prefer having your own private room rather than sharing, you can opt for a single supplement when booking.

  • Private & Custom Trips: Solo travelers or members of a private party who want separate rooms will have the single room cost factored directly into their tailored quote.

Are meals included in the tour price?

Meal inclusions vary by destination and the style of the trip:

  • Bhutan and Mongolia: All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are typically fully included throughout the entire journey.

  • Trekking in Nepal and the Indian Himalayas: All meals are included while you are on the mountain trek. In cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Delhi, trips operate on a bed-and-breakfast basis, giving you the freedom to explore the vibrant local culinary scene and choose where to dine.

  • Other destinations: Usually include daily breakfast at your hotel, with select welcome or farewell dinners, leaving lunches and most dinners open so you can sample regional specialties at your own pace.

Your detailed day-by-day trip dossier will always specify the exact meal plan (B, L, D) for each day.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we smoothly accommodate most dietary needs and preferences with advance notice:

  • Vegetarian & Vegan Diets: Well-catered across all destinations. Local Himalayan cuisines (especially in Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet) naturally feature rich varieties of vegetarian lentils, fresh vegetables, tofu, and rice dishes.

  • Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, & Food Allergies: We can accommodate gluten sensitivities, lactose intolerance, nut allergies, and other dietary requirements. Our local guides and kitchen teams communicate directly with hotels, lodges, and restaurants to ensure meals are prepared safely.

  • Trekking & Remote Journeys: On mountain treks and in remote regions, tea house and camp menus are adapted to your requirements. We generally encourage eating primarily vegetarian meals while trekking at high altitude for optimal digestion and food safety.

  • Advance Notice: Please notify us of your specific dietary restrictions or allergies during the booking process so our field team can make all necessary preparations ahead of time.

Safety & Health

How do you ensure traveler safety on your trips?

Traveler safety and well-being are our highest priorities. We maintain strict health, safety, and risk-management standards across all destinations:

  • Certified, Experienced Local Guides: Every journey is led by professional, licensed local guides and support crews trained in wilderness first aid, emergency response, and localized risk management.

  • Thoughtful Acclimatization Profiles: High-altitude itineraries (such as Tibet, Everest Base Camp, and Bhutan) are carefully paced with gradual elevation gains, built-in rest days, and the "climb high, sleep low" principle to minimize altitude-related risks.

  • Rigorous Food & Water Hygiene: We partner with thoroughly vetted hotels, lodges, and restaurants that follow strict hygiene standards. On treks and remote expeditions, all cooking and drinking water is reliably boiled or purified.

  • Emergency Preparedness & Evacuation Support: Guides carry comprehensive first-aid supplies and maintain constant communication channels with our regional operations hubs. In the rare event of a severe medical issue, our team coordinates immediate descent or emergency helicopter evacuation.

  • Safe, Reliable Transportation: We use well-maintained, private vehicles suitable for mountainous terrain, driven by seasoned professional drivers who know local road conditions intimately.

  • Small Group Size: Keeping group departures intimate allows our trip leaders to provide attentive, personalized care and closely monitor each traveler’s health and comfort.

What precautions do you take for high‑altitude itineraries?

Traveling to high-altitude regions like Tibet, Bhutan, Ladakh, and the Nepal Himalayas requires careful planning and physiological awareness. We implement comprehensive measures to ensure safe, comfortable acclimatization:

  • Gradual Ascent & Smart Itinerary Design: Our routes are intentionally crafted to limit excessive daily altitude gains. We incorporate built-in acclimatization rest days and follow the proven "climb high, sleep low" principle before crossing major high passes.

  • Trained High-Altitude Guides: Field guides are trained in wilderness medicine, symptom recognition for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), and proper descent protocols.

  • Daily Health Monitoring: On high-elevation treks and tours, guides carry pulse oximeters to track your blood oxygen saturation () and resting heart rate, checking in daily on how you are feeling.

  • Medical Supplies & Supplemental Oxygen: Trekking groups and remote tour vehicles are equipped with comprehensive first-aid kits, emergency supplemental oxygen canisters, and portable hyperbaric chambers (Gamow bags) where applicable on remote expeditions.

  • Strict Hydration & Nutrition Guidance: Our crew emphasizes proper daily hydration (3–4 liters of fluids per day), balanced carbohydrate-rich meals, and avoiding excess alcohol or sedatives during the acclimatization phase.

  • Emergency Evacuation Protocols: If symptoms of severe altitude sickness appear, the immediate priority is guided descent. Our field teams maintain constant communication with regional operations centers to coordinate rapid helicopter rescue or road evacuations when medically required.

  • Pre-Trip Guidance & Diamox Advice: Prior to departure, we provide detailed preparation dossiers explaining physical conditioning, hydration strategies, and recommendations to consult a travel doctor regarding prophylactic medications like Acetazolamide (Diamox).

Do you carry oxygen or emergency equipment?

Yes, we carry essential medical and emergency response gear tailored to the terrain and altitude profile of each journey:

  • Supplemental Oxygen: Emergency oxygen cylinders and masks are standard equipment on all high-altitude overland tours (such as overland Tibet, Ladakh, & Mustang Nepal) and on remote high-mountain trekking expeditions.

  • Comprehensive First-Aid Kits: Our guides carry professional wilderness first-aid kits stocked with bandages, wound-care supplies, splints, antiseptic treatments, and essential over-the-counter medications for common ailments (GI distress, pain relief, rehydration salts).

  • Pulse Oximeters: Guides carry fingertip pulse oximeters on high-altitude itineraries to monitor blood oxygen levels () and resting heart rates daily.

  • Specialized High-Altitude Equipment (On Remote Treks): For remote, high-risk, or high-pass trekking routes, our expeditions are equipped with portable hyperbaric bags (Gamow bags) when required by expedition logistics.

  • Personal Medication Reminder: While our team carries emergency first-aid supplies, we require all travelers to bring their own personal prescription medications, basic personal blister kits, and any recommended altitude medications (such as Diamox).

What happens if I get sick during the trip?

If you feel unwell at any point during your journey, our experienced field team and 24/7 ground operations network are prepared to provide immediate care and logistical support:

  • Immediate Assessment & Basic First Aid: Notify your guide as soon as you experience any symptoms, even minor ones like a headache, nausea, or fatigue. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry medical kits to address common travel issues like dehydration, minor injuries, and gastrointestinal upset.

  • Access to Local Medical Facilities: In towns and cities, our operations team coordinates appointments at reputable local clinics or private international hospitals, and a staff member assists you with logistics and translation.

  • High-Altitude Illness Response: If you show symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) that do not improve with rest, our golden rule is immediate, guided descent to a lower elevation. Supplemental oxygen is administered when necessary.

  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: For serious medical conditions or severe altitude illness on remote mountain routes, our operations center mobilizes emergency response protocols immediately. We coordinate helicopter rescues or ground vehicle evacuations to transport you directly to an advanced medical facility.

  • Insurance Coordination & On-Ground Support: We assist in communicating with your travel insurance provider, organizing medical reports, rearranging transportation, and booking extra hotel lodging or revised flight connections if your itinerary needs adjustment while you recover.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers joining our trips:

  • Mandatory Medical & Emergency Evacuation Coverage: Your policy must cover emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, and emergency medical evacuation (including helicopter rescue where applicable).

  • High-Altitude Coverage: If you are traveling to high-altitude destinations (such as Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, or Ladakh), your policy must explicitly cover trekking and activities up to the maximum elevation of your itinerary (often up to 5,000 to 6,000 meters / 16,500 to 20,000 feet), as standard policies often exclude high-altitude terrain.

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption (Strongly Recommended): We strongly advise selecting a policy that covers trip cancellation, travel delays, lost or delayed baggage, and trip interruption to protect your investment in case of unforeseen circumstances prior to or during travel.

  • Policy Verification: We require proof of insurance (provider name, policy number, and 24-hour emergency assistance contact number) prior to trip departure.

  • Insurance Assistance: If you need assistance selecting a suitable plan, we can provide recommendations or quotes through trusted travel insurance providers (such as Travel Insured International) tailored to your age, trip cost, and itinerary elevation.

Booking, Payments, Cancellation & Refund?

How do I book a trip with Far & High?

Booking your adventure is simple and flexible. You can reserve your spot through any of the following convenient methods:

  1. Book Online (Recommended): Visit our website at farandhigh.com. Navigate to your chosen itinerary, select your preferred departure date, and click the "Book Now" button to complete the secure reservation form and deposit.

  2. Book by Email: Send us an email from our contact page with your intended trip name, travel dates, party size, and any special requests. Our travel advisors will reply with full details, confirm availability, and send a direct reservation link.

  3. Book by Phone or WhatsApp: Call our office at (952) 214-4964 to speak directly with a destination specialist who will answer questions and walk you through the reservation step-by-step.

What happens next?

Once your booking form and initial deposit are received, you will receive an automated booking confirmation email with your order details. Our team will follow up promptly with your comprehensive pre-departure packet, invoice schedule, and visa/permit application instructions.

What is your deposit and payment schedule?

To secure your reservation and confirm logistical arrangements, our payment schedule is structured in three straightforward stages:

  1. Initial Deposit (Upon Booking): A non-refundable deposit of 15% of the total tour cost or US$ 300 per person (whichever is higher) is required at the time of reservation to confirm your spot and initiate permit processing and hotel holds.

  2. Internal Airfare Payment (If Applicable): If your itinerary includes domestic or internal regional flights (such as flights to Paro, Lukla, Lhasa, or domestic sectors within India/Mongolia), we may request a second payment to cover these airfares in full as soon as tickets need to be issued and non-refundable seats secured.

  3. Final Balance: The remaining balance is typically due 90 days prior to your trip departure date. For reservations made within 90 days of departure, full payment is required at the time of booking.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we are happy to offer flexible installment payment plans:

  • Flexible Installments: After paying the initial deposit (and any applicable internal airfare costs), you can divide your remaining balance into monthly or customized milestone payments to suit your budgeting needs.

  • No Extra Fees: We do not charge interest or administrative fees for setting up an installment plan.

  • Final Due Date: Regardless of the installment schedule chosen, the entire tour balance must be fully paid 90 days (3 months) prior to your trip departure date.

  • How to Set It Up: Contact our team after submitting your initial reservation, and we will work with you to set up a convenient payment schedule and automated invoice reminders.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We offer several secure and convenient payment methods:

  • Credit / Debit Cards: All major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) processed securely online via PayPal or Stripe. (Note: Credit card payments may incur a standard 3.5% merchant processing fee).

  • Zelle Payments: Fast, fee-free electronic transfers directly from your U.S. bank account.

  • Online Wire / Bank Transfers: Domestic and international bank wire transfers. Detailed routing and wire instructions are provided directly on your invoice. (Any outgoing/incoming intermediary bank transfer fees must be covered by the sender).

  • Personal Checks: U.S. dollar personal checks or cashier's checks drawn on a U.S. bank, made payable to Far & High Adventure Travel and mailed to our Minnesota office.

All payment details, direct checkout links, and mailing instructions are provided on your personalized trip invoice.

When is my trip considered confirmed ?

Your reservation goes through a two-step confirmation process to ensure every detail is in place:

  1. Initial Booking Acknowledgement: When you submit your booking online, you will receive an automated email. This serves as an immediate receipt and acknowledgement of your booking request, but does not yet guarantee your placement.

  2. Advisor Review & Final Confirmation: One of our travel advisors manually reviews your booking, checks real-time availability (hotel allocations, flight seats, and regional permits), and may contact you for any additional required details (such as passport copies).

  3. Official Status: Once reviewed, we issue your official Trip Confirmation Email and Tour Invoice. Unless there is an unexpected overbooking issue or permit constraint, your booking is confirmed at this stage.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel your trip, your cancellation notice must be submitted in writing via email. Cancellation fees are calculated based on the date we receive your written notification:

Land Tour Cancellation Fees:

  • 90 or more days prior to departure: Administrative fee of US$ 150 per person (the remainder of your deposit is refunded).

  • 60 to 89 days prior to departure: US$ 300 or 25% of the total land cost, whichever is higher.

  • 45 to 59 days prior to departure: US$ 450 or 50% of the total land cost, whichever is higher.

  • Less than 45 days prior to departure: 100% non-refundable (no refund issued).

Additional Cancellation Terms:

  • Internal / Domestic Airfare: Refunds for flight tickets follow the specific fare rules and cancellation penalties of the issuing airline, plus a standard service fee of US$ 25 per ticket segment.

  • Unused Services: No refunds, credits, or fee adjustments are provided for any unused hotel nights, meals, transportation, trekking days, or sightseeing once the tour has commenced.

  • Non-Refundable Items: Travel insurance premiums, visa fees, and government permit processing fees already disbursed are strictly non-refundable.

Trip Cancellation Insurance: Because unexpected events (medical emergencies, family matters, or travel delays) can arise, we strongly advise all travelers to purchase comprehensive Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance to protect their financial investment.

What happens if Far & High cancels a trip?

While we make every effort to operate all scheduled departures, unforeseen circumstances may occasionally require a trip cancellation:

  • Cancellation Due to Low Enrollment: If a scheduled small-group departure fails to reach the minimum number of participants, we will notify you at least 60 to 90 days prior to departure. In this case, you will have the choice to:

    • Transfer your full payment to another scheduled departure date or alternative itinerary with no transfer fees.

    • Pay a small small-group surcharge to operate the trip privately for your party.

    • Receive a 100% full refund of all land tour payments made to Far & High.

  • Cancellation Due to Force Majeure: If a trip is cancelled due to events beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political instability, border closures, government travel restrictions, or severe weather conditions, we will issue a future travel credit or a refund minus any unrecoverable, non-refundable costs already paid to local operators, airlines, hotels, or government permit offices.

  • Excluded Expenses: Far & High is not responsible for any independent expenses incurred in preparation for the trip, including non-refundable international airfare, visa processing fees, passport renewal costs, medical vaccinations, or personal gear purchases.

Insurance Protection: This is why comprehensive Trip Cancellation and Interruption Travel Insurance is essential to safeguard your non-refundable travel arrangements against unexpected cancellations.

Are deposits refundable?

Yes, tour deposits are refundable under the following conditions:

  • Cancellation 90 or More Days Before Departure: If you voluntarily cancel your booking in writing 90 days or more prior to the trip departure date, your deposit will be refunded minus an administrative processing fee of US$ 150 per person.

  • Cancellation Within 90 Days: For voluntary cancellations received fewer than 90 days prior to departure, standard cancellation fee tiers apply (where the deposit and subsequent payments become subject to partial or full retention based on the timeframe).

  • Non-Refundable Specific Costs: Any portion of the deposit allocated toward non-refundable expenses already disbursed on your behalf, such as issued domestic airfares, special non-refundable permits, or visa processing fees, cannot be refunded.

Can I transfer my booking to another date or traveler?

Yes, booking transfers are possible under the following conditions, depending on the timing and the components of your trip:

  • Transferring to a Different Date or Tour:

    • 90 or more days prior to departure: You may transfer your deposit and payments to a new departure date or an alternative itinerary for a standard administrative transfer fee of US$ 100 per person, subject to trip availability.

    • Within 90 days of departure: Date transfers are generally treated as a standard cancellation and rebooking, as hotels, transport, and local guides are already contracted. However, we do our best to minimize fees on a case-by-case basis.

  • Transferring to Another Traveler (Name Changes):

    • You may transfer your land booking to another eligible traveler who meets the trip requirements, provided written notice is submitted at least 90 days before departure. An administrative fee applies, plus any costs associated with re-issuing name-specific permits

  • Non-Transferable Components:

  • Airfare: Domestic and regional flight tickets are strictly non-transferable due to strict airline regulations. Name changes or date shifts for flights will require cancellation and re-ticketing subject to the airline’s rules, fare differences, and change fees.

  • Restricted Government Permits: Non-transferable government permits (such as Bhutan visa clearances, Tibet Travel Permits, or special restricted area permits in Nepal and India) must be cancelled and re-applied for under the new traveler's passport details at the traveler's expense.

Travel Documents & Preparation

Do I need a visa for my destination?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and destination. Across all countries, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date with at least 2 blank visa pages.

Here is an overview of entry and visa requirements for our core destinations (for U.S., Canadian, UK, EU, and Australian passport holders):

Himalayas & East Asia

  • Tibet (Tibet Autonomous Region):

    • Entering from Nepal (Kathmandu): Travelers holding an individual Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa) or citizens qualifying for China's visa-free policy can enter Tibet directly from Nepal without needing to obtain a separate Chinese Group Visa in Kathmandu. Far & High arranges your official Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) and provides the electronic permit version / border clearance in advance for your flight or overland crossing. If you do not have an individual Chinese visa, a China Group Tourist Visa can still be coordinated in Kathmandu.

    • Entering via Mainland China: You obtain your individual Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa) in your home country, and Far & High processes your mandatory Tibet Travel Permit.

  • Nepal:

    • On-Arrival / Online Pre-Registration: Tourist visas are available upon arrival at Kathmandu Airport (Tribhuvan International) or land borders ($30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days). You can pre-fill the online application form within 14 days of arrival.

    • Trekking Permits: Far & High arranges all national park permits, TIMS cards, and restricted-area permits (e.g., Upper Mustang, Manaslu) on your behalf.

  • Bhutan:

    • Handled Directly by Far & High: Independent visa applications are not permitted. We process your official Bhutan Visa Clearance directly with the Department of Tourism once your booking and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) are paid. You will present this clearance letter at airline check-in.

  • India:

    • Electronic Visa (e-Visa): Most travelers apply online for an Indian Tourist e-Visa (30-day, 1-year, or 5-year) at least 4 to 30 days before departure via the official government portal. We arrange special inner-line/restricted area permits for Ladakh, Sikkim, or Northeast India.

  • Mongolia:

    • Visa-Free / e-Visa: U.S. citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Canada, the UK, Australia, and EU countries enjoy visa waivers or can apply online for a standard tourist e-Visa.

Southeast Asia

  • Thailand:

    • Visa Exemption: Most Western passport holders receive a visa-exempt entry stamp on arrival for tourism (valid for up to 30 to 60 days depending on current bilateral regulations). No pre-application is required.

  • Vietnam:

    • Electronic Visa (e-Visa): All visitors requiring a visa can apply directly through the official Vietnam Immigration e-Visa portal. Tourist e-Visas are issued for up to 90 days (single or multiple entry). We recommend applying at least 2 weeks before departure.

  • Cambodia:

    • e-Visa or Visa on Arrival (VoA): You can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at international airports and major land border crossings (approx. US$ 30 cash + passport photo), or apply in advance via the official Cambodia e-Visa portal.

  • Laos:

    • e-Visa or Visa on Arrival (VoA): Available on arrival at major international airports (Vientiane, Luang Prabang) and select border crossings (approx. US$ 40 cash + photo), or online via the official Laos eVisa system prior to travel.

  • Malaysia:

    • Visa-Free Entry + MDAC: Most Western passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. All foreign travelers are required to complete the free online Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days prior to arrival.

Prior to your trip, Far & High provides a detailed Pre-Departure Dossier with step-by-step visa instructions, official government portal links, and documentation support for your specific itinerary.

Can you assist with visa arrangements?

Yes, we provide direct application handling for select destinations and complete guidance for all others:

  • Destinations Handled Directly by Far & High:

    • Bhutan: We handle the entire visa process on your behalf. Once your booking and required fees are submitted, we apply for and secure your official Bhutan Visa Clearance Letter directly with the Department of Tourism.

    • Tibet: We process and secure all mandatory Tibet Travel Permits (TTP), military permits, and regional travel endorsements required for your overland or flight entry.

  • All Other Destinations (Self-Arranged):

    • For countries such as Nepal, India, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia, travelers must obtain their visas independently (via online e-Visa portals, on-arrival facilities, or local embassies/consulates).

  • Dedicated Advisor Guidance:

    • Your Far & High travel advisor will provide comprehensive, step-by-step instructions, official government application links, and required documentation (such as hotel confirmation vouchers or visa invitation letters) to ensure your application process is smooth and hassle-free.

What vaccinations or health documents are required?

Entry requirements and medical advisories depend on your destination, but here is a clear breakdown of required documents versus recommended immunizations:

Mandatory Health Documents & Requirements

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate: Mandatory only if you are arriving from or transiting for more than 12 hours through an endemic Yellow Fever country (parts of Sub-Saharan Africa or South America). In such cases, an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is legally required at immigration across all Asian destinations.

  • Travel Insurance Documentation: Proof of comprehensive travel medical insurance, specifically including high-altitude emergency medical evacuation for mountain routes, is required for all Far & High travelers.

  • Routine Entry Requirements: General mandatory COVID-19 vaccination mandates and PCR testing have been lifted across our operating regions, though standard health declaration forms may occasionally be requested upon entry.

Strongly Recommended Travel Immunizations

We advise consulting a travel medicine clinic or your physician 4 to 8 weeks before departure to ensure your immunizations are up to date:

  • Routine Vaccines: Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap), Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), Polio, and annual Influenza.

  • Food & Water-Borne Illnesses: Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are strongly advised for all travelers visiting South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia.

  • Regional / Extended Exposure: Hepatitis B, Rabies (recommended for rural travel, remote trekking, or extended outdoor activities), and Japanese Encephalitis (for rural/agricultural stays during monsoon or warm seasons).

  • Malaria & Dengue Precautions: High-altitude mountain regions (Tibet, Bhutan, high Nepal treks, Ladakh) carry no risk of malaria or dengue. If your itinerary includes lowland tropical jungles (such as Chitwan in Nepal, rural areas of Southeast Asia, or rural India), consult your doctor regarding antimalarial prophylaxis and pack EPA-registered insect repellent.

Always carry any personal prescription medications in their original pharmacy-labeled containers in your carry-on luggage, along with a copy of your prescriptions.

Will you provide a detailed pre‑departure briefing?

Yes, we provide comprehensive pre-departure materials and personalized support to ensure you are fully prepared:

  • Final Trip Dossier: Prior to departure, you will receive a comprehensive, detailed trip dossier containing all essential pre-departure information, including day-by-day logistics, hotel contacts, packing and gear recommendations, visa procedures, health/altitude advice, local customs, and emergency contact numbers.

  • Continuous Advisor Support: We do not typically hold formal, scheduled group briefings because most travelers find all their questions thoroughly answered during direct one-on-one communication with their dedicated travel advisor from the time of booking.

  • Custom Briefing on Request: If you are traveling with a private group of family, friends, or colleagues, we are happy to arrange a scheduled virtual pre-departure briefing over Zoom or phone upon request to walk through the itinerary, review gear, and answer any final questions.

Sustainability & Responsible Travel

How does Far & High support local communities?

Responsible, community-centered tourism is at the core of how we operate. We believe travel should directly benefit the people and places that welcome us:

  • Supporting Local Schools, Libraries & Community Initiatives: We actively contribute to grassroots education and social development by supporting local village schools, community libraries, and small non-profit organizations in the rural regions we visit. Whether through educational materials, book donations, or direct institutional support, we help empower the next generation.

  • 100% Native Local Leaders & Crews: We exclusively employ local, licensed native guides, drivers, cooks, and support teams rather than flying in Western trip leaders. This ensures your tourism dollars directly support local families and economies while providing you with authentic cultural insight.

  • Fair Wages & Porter Welfare: We maintain strict ethical standards for our field staff and porters, guaranteeing fair living wages, medical and emergency insurance coverage, appropriate load limits, and proper gear for high-altitude conditions.

  • Prioritizing Locally Owned Establishments: Wherever possible, we partner with family-run guesthouses, locally owned boutique hotels, village homestays, community tea houses, and traditional nomadic ger camps, ensuring revenue stays rooted in the host community.

  • Ultra-Small Group Travel: By keeping our group departures intimate and focusing on private, custom journeys, we minimize environmental impact on delicate trails, reduce pressure on sacred heritage sites, and foster respectful, meaningful cross-cultural connections.

  • Preserving Cultural Heritage: We encourage respectful engagement with local artisans, monasteries, cultural festivals, and community-led conservation projects, helping preserve traditional crafts, sacred rituals, and indigenous heritage for future generations.

What steps do you take to minimize environmental impact?

Preserving the fragile ecosystems and cultural landscapes of the Himalayas, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia is central to our mission. We implement practical, low-impact practices across every journey:

  • Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: We actively discourage single-use plastic water bottles. On treks, expeditions, and overland journeys, we provide safe, boiled or filtered refill water stations, encouraging travelers to bring durable, reusable bottles or hydration bladders and water-purification tablets.

  • Strict Leave-No-Trace Principles: Our field crews follow comprehensive Leave-No-Trace (LNT) guidelines. All non-biodegradable waste generated during camping and trekking expeditions is packed out and carried to designated municipal disposal facilities rather than left in remote mountain environments.

  • Eco-Friendly & Low-Impact Lodging: We prioritize eco-lodges, family-run guesthouses, and traditional tented camps that utilize renewable energy (such as solar water heating and solar electricity) and practice responsible waste and water management.

  • Ultra-Small Group Sizes: Keeping group departures intentionally small minimizes trail erosion, prevents overcrowding at sensitive cultural and natural landmarks, and lessens the physical footprint on remote communities with limited infrastructure.

  • Responsible Wildlife & Habitat Protection: In national parks and nature preserves, from the wildlife sanctuaries of Nepal and India to the steppes of Mongolia, our guides enforce strict viewing distances and trail regulations to prevent disturbing wildlife or damaging fragile flora.

  • Paperless Operations & Digital Dossiers: We minimize paper waste by issuing digital itineraries, electronic pre-departure dossiers, and paperless booking and invoicing workflows.
