Trip Introduction

Two small monastic festivals in Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of central Bhutan, back to back in June: Nimalung Tshechu in the Chumey Valley and the one-day Kurjey Tshechu beneath the cliff where Guru Rinpoche meditated. Stand among local families for the Black Hat Dance, rise before dawn for the unfurling of the Guru Tshengye Thongdrel, and finish with the climb to Paro Taktsang.

Upon clearing customs, receive a warm, traditional Bhutanese welcome with the offering of ceremonial white khada scarves by your guide and driver. Head up to the Paro Airport Bird’s Eye Viewpoint for a sweeping panoramic vista across the willow-fringed valley and airstrip. Next, take an excursion to the cliffside monastery of Dzongdrakha, where four whitewashed chapels cling dramatically to a vertical cliff above terraced farmsteads, an auspicious preview of the spiritual traditions celebrated during the Nimalung Tshechu and Kurjey Tshechu.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Thimphu, Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge & Chuzom Confluence

Following a traditional Bhutanese lunch in Paro, begin your scenic drive toward Thimphu along the winding Pa Chhu and Wang Chhu river valleys. Stop en route at Tamchog Lhakhang (Tachogang), founded in the 15th century by the legendary iron-bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo, to cross the historic iron-chain suspension bridge draped in vibrant prayer flags. Pass through Chuzom, the scenic river confluence marked by three stupas in Tibetan, Nepalese, and traditional Bhutanese architectural styles, before climbing into the Thimphu Valley.

Evening: Hotel Check-in, Clock Tower Square Stroll & Local Craft Bazaar Exploration

Arrive in Thimphu and check into your hotel. Spend a relaxed evening taking an orientation stroll around Clock Tower Square and browsing the local craft bazaar for handwoven textiles, prayer items, and traditional Bhutanese handicrafts, a colorful introduction to the heritage showcased at the Nimalung Tshechu and Kurjey Tshechu.

Step inside the grand three-story throne hall housing 125,000 smaller miniature Buddhas. Continue down to the National Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 to honor the Third Druk Gyalpo; join local devotees as they circumambulate the whitewashed monument and spin massive prayer wheels in morning devotion. Conclude your morning at the Simply Bhutan Living Museum, an interactive heritage center where you can try your hand at traditional archery (Dha), sample butter tea and roasted barley (Tsampa), and witness live folk dances that reflect the timeless customs also celebrated at the Nimalung Tshechu and Kurjey Tshechu.

Afternoon: Motithang Takin Preserve, BBS Tower Viewpoint & Wangditse Goemba Nature Hike

Following lunch at a local restaurant in town, head up to the Motithang Takin Preserve to observe Bhutan’s unusual national animal, the takin (Budorcas taxicolor), which legend claims was miraculously created by the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley. Drive higher to the BBS Tower (Sangaygang) viewpoint for panoramic vistas over the northern valley before setting off on a peaceful nature walk. The gently contoured trail to Wangditse Goemba winds through pine, oak, and rhododendron woods draped in Spanish moss, providing sweeping views of the valley below. As the seat of the national government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot), the fortress opens its grand inner courtyard and monastic assembly halls to visitors after government office hours. Marvel at the soaring wooden architecture, intricate choesham shrines, and vibrant murals depicting the Wheel of Life. As dusk settles, view the fortress exterior as its golden roofs and whitewashed walls are illuminated against the evening sky, a regal preview of the sacred Dzong atmosphere awaiting you at the Nimalung Tshechu and Kurjey Tshechu.

Afternoon: Historic Rinchengang Village Walk & Ascent Across Lawala Pass to Gangtey

After lunch, cross the river below Wangdue to embark on a short walking excursion through Rinchengang Village. Perched on a dramatic hill slope facing the old Wangduephodrang Dzong, this historic clustered settlement is famous for its preserved rammed-earth architecture and stone masonry heritage. Reboard your vehicle and follow the lateral highway east, ascending steadily toward Lawala Pass (3,360 m / 11,023 ft), adorned with colorful wind-horse prayer flags and dwarf bamboo meadows, before dropping into the wide glacial basin of Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey).

Join locals in offering prayers, receiving direct blessings, and observing the sacred dawn rites before the tapestry is carefully rolled back before the sun’s rays touch the fabric. Return to Chumey Nature Resort for a warm breakfast, then check out and drive across pine-clad Kiki La Pass (2,860 m / 9,383 ft) into the Choekhor Valley (Jakar).

Proceed directly to Kurjey Lhakhang to join the vibrant, one-day Kurjey Tshechu. Following lunch, explore the colossal Trongsa Dzong ("Choetse Dzong"), the largest and most strategically formidable fortress in Bhutan. Built in 1644, this massive multi-level complex served as the ancestral seat of power from which the Wangchuck dynasty unified the kingdom. Walk through its multi-tiered courtyards, narrow stone stairways, and ornate assembly halls housing historic murals and chapels. Afterward, visit the historic watchtower directly above, Ta Dzong, converted into the state-of-the-art Museum of Monarchy, housing royal crowns, ancient armor, and sacred Buddhist artifacts.

Ta Dzong Rooftop Panorama: Take the stairs to the uppermost roof of the Ta Dzong museum for an unobstructed 360-degree view looking straight down over the fortress spine and deep into the river gorge below.

Stop at the historic Chendebji Chorten, an 18th-century Nepalese-style stupa built by Lama Shida to subdue a malevolent demoness, featuring distinctive painted eyes gazing in the four cardinal directions. Continue ascending through high-altitude dwarf bamboo pastures and yak-grazing meadows to cross Pele La Pass (3,420 m / 11,220 ft), the traditional divide between central and western Bhutan adorned with thousands of vibrant prayer flags.
