Morning: Arrival in Paro, Welcome Reception & Cultural Highlights
Kuzu Zangpola! Welcome to Bhutan! Your 5-Day Thimphu Paro Tour begins high above the clouds as you fly into Paro, one of the world's most spectacular mountain airports. As your flight descends into Bhutan, look out for awe-inspiring views of snow-capped Himalayan giants, including Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga, along with Bhutan's sacred peaks, Mount Chomolhari and Jichu Drake.
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, your local guide and driver will warmly welcome you after you clear immigration and customs.
Smooth Travel Note: Simply present the Visa Approval document we email to you before your trip, and you'll receive your official visa sticker at passport control.
Before beginning your sightseeing, we'll take you to the nearby Paro Airport Bird's Eye View Point, where you can enjoy sweeping views across the picturesque Paro Valley. Lush fields, traditional whitewashed farmhouses, the meandering Paro Chhu River, and the surrounding emerald-green hills create a beautiful introduction to Bhutan. From the viewpoint, you can also see the dramatic airport runway and the impressive silhouette of Rinpung Dzong.
After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, your Thimphu Paro Tour continues with your first cultural discoveries in Paro:
Ta Dzong – National Museum of Bhutan: Perched above the Paro Valley, this historic watchtower now houses the National Museum, offering an engaging introduction to Bhutanese history, religion, and art. Its collections include traditional textiles, manuscripts, armor, crafts, religious artifacts, and colorful paintings. The museum's hilltop location also provides excellent views of the valley and Rinpung Dzong.
Rinpung Dzong: Descend into the valley to explore the magnificent "Fortress on a Heap of Jewels." Built in the 17th century, this impressive dzong features towering whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, and peaceful courtyards. It serves as both a monastery and the administrative center of Paro District and is one of Bhutan's most significant architectural and cultural landmarks.
Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Thimphu & Evening Walking Tour
Leaving Paro behind, we take a scenic drive of about an hour toward Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Along the way, we'll stop at Tamchog Lhakhang, a historic temple associated with the legendary 13th-century saint, architect, and iron-bridge builder Thangthong Gyalpo. A short walk across the traditional iron bridge leads to the temple and offers a glimpse into Bhutan's distinctive religious heritage.

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Thimphu, Bhutan's charming Himalayan capital. Today's journey combines important Buddhist landmarks, traditional Bhutanese culture, local markets, and scenic mountain trails, giving you a deeper appreciation of life in the capital.
Our first stop is the magnificent Buddha Dordenma Statue, one of Thimphu's most recognizable landmarks. Perched high on a hill overlooking the capital, the enormous gilded Buddha sits surrounded by smaller Buddha images and offers sweeping views across the Thimphu Valley. Take a moment to enjoy the peaceful setting and the panorama of the city and surrounding mountains.
Continue to the Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu's most important religious landmarks. Built in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the whitewashed stupa is a popular place of worship for local residents. Join pilgrims as they circumambulate the chorten, spin prayer wheels, and offer prayers in this peaceful corner of the city.
Next, visit Simply Bhutan Museum, a living museum that introduces you to the country's traditional way of life. Through traditional architecture, demonstrations, costumes, crafts, food, and cultural performances, the museum provides an engaging introduction to Bhutanese customs and everyday life.
From there, experience a slice of contemporary Thimphu at the Centenary Farmers' Market. Located beside the Wang Chhu River, the market brings together farmers and vendors from across the region. Browse stalls filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, chilies, cheese, spices, and other local products while experiencing the lively atmosphere of one of the capital's favorite weekend gathering places.
Afternoon: Takin Reserve & Wangditse Goemba Hike
After lunch, head into the forested hills above Thimphu to visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan's unusual national animal, the takin. These distinctive Himalayan animals are closely associated with Bhutanese folklore and are one of the country's most fascinating wildlife symbols.
Continue into the hills for the Wangditse Goemba Hike, a rewarding excursion through pine and mixed forests above the Thimphu Valley. The trail offers fresh mountain air, peaceful woodland scenery, prayer flags, and increasingly expansive views of the capital below.
The hike continues toward Dechen Phodrang Monastery, an important Buddhist monastic institution located above Thimphu. The monastery has a rich religious and artistic heritage, including traditional Buddhist paintings and statues. Its elevated setting provides a tranquil conclusion to your afternoon walk.
The combination of cultural sites and an easy-to-moderate Himalayan walk makes today a memorable part of your Thimphu Paro Tour, allowing you to experience both the spiritual heart and natural surroundings of Bhutan's capital.
Late Afternoon: Tashichho Dzong
In the late afternoon, return to central Thimphu for a visit to the magnificent Tashichho Dzong. Set beside the Wang Chhu River, this impressive fortress-monastery is one of Bhutan's most important landmarks and serves as the seat of the country's government and the central monastic body.
Admire its imposing whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, golden details, and spacious courtyards as the changing afternoon light illuminates the building. If timing permits, you may also witness the traditional changing of the guard before taking a final stroll around the dzong grounds.
After a full day of exploring Thimphu's religious landmarks, local markets, cultural traditions, and mountain trails, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

After breakfast, leave Thimphu and drive toward Paro, with a spectacular mountain excursion to Chele La Pass, one of Bhutan's highest motorable passes at approximately 3,988 meters (13,084 feet). As the road climbs through dense forests, the landscape gradually changes from pine and broadleaf woodland to alpine meadows and windswept mountain terrain.
At the pass, take time to enjoy the magnificent Himalayan panorama. On a clear day, the surrounding peaks stretch toward the horizon, while colorful prayer flags flutter in the mountain wind. The high-altitude landscape offers a dramatic contrast to the valleys and forests you experienced earlier on your Thimphu Paro Tour.
Late Morning: Hike to Kila Nunnery
From Chele La, begin a scenic downhill hike through the peaceful mountain landscape toward Kila Nunnery, one of Bhutan's oldest centers of Buddhist learning for nuns. The trail winds through alpine terrain and forest, with prayer flags and mountain views accompanying you along the way.
Kila Nunnery is dramatically built into the mountainside beneath towering cliffs. The secluded setting has long provided a place for meditation and spiritual practice. Take time to appreciate the serene surroundings and, where appropriate, the traditional architecture of the nunnery before continuing your journey toward Paro Valley.
Afternoon: Dzongdrakha Monastery & Paro Valley
Continue toward Dzongdrakha Monastery, a remarkable cluster of temples built into a rocky cliff above the Paro Valley. Often described as a smaller counterpart to Paro Taktsang, the monastery complex occupies a dramatic hillside location and is associated with Guru Rinpoche and Bhutan's rich Buddhist traditions.
A short walk leads up to the monastery, where you can explore the sacred temples and enjoy beautiful views across the Paro Valley. The peaceful setting, traditional architecture, and surrounding countryside make Dzongdrakha a rewarding cultural stop away from Paro's more frequently visited landmarks.
After visiting the monastery, continue into the Paro Valley and check in at Khangkhu Resort. Relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings after your day in the mountains.

Day 4: The Ultimate Taktsang Monastery a.k.a Tiger's Nest Hiking
Morning: The Ultimate Bhutan Experience – Tiger’s Nest Monastery
After an early breakfast, prepare for the highlight of your Thimphu Paro Tour: a hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Monastery), dramatically perched on a sheer cliffside high above the Paro Valley.
From the trailhead, begin the uphill hike through pine and rhododendron forests. Colorful prayer flags, mountain views, and the peaceful sounds of the forest accompany you as you gradually climb toward one of Bhutan’s most sacred Buddhist sites.
The trail leads to a traditional viewpoint overlooking Taktsang Monastery, where the spectacular complex appears to cling to the face of the cliff. Continue along the trail, descending a series of steps into the gorge before climbing again to reach the monastery itself.
According to Bhutanese tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) arrived here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in the cave where the monastery now stands. Explore the sacred temples and take time to appreciate the remarkable setting before beginning your descent.
Hiking Note: The hike to Tiger’s Nest is approximately 5–6 km (3–4 miles) round trip, generally taking 4–5 hours, depending on your pace and the amount of time spent at the monastery and viewpoints. The trail involves a significant uphill climb and several flights of stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes and an early start are recommended.
After returning to the trailhead, enjoy lunch and take some time to relax before continuing your exploration of the Paro Valley.
Afternoon: Ancient Dzong, Sacred Temple & Bhutanese Farmhouse
Your afternoon begins with a visit to Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress at the northern end of the Paro Valley. Built in the 17th century, the dzong once helped defend the valley against invading forces and played an important role in Bhutan's history. Although much of the fortress was destroyed by fire, its imposing ruins and surrounding mountain scenery remain impressive. On a clear day, you may also catch a glimpse of Mount Chomolhari in the distance.
Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples. Believed to have been founded in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, this sacred temple offers a glimpse into the deep Buddhist traditions that have shaped Bhutan for centuries. Walk around the temple grounds, spin the prayer wheels, and experience the tranquil atmosphere of this ancient spiritual site.
Next, step into rural Bhutan with a visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse. Here, you can see the distinctive architecture and learn about everyday life in the Paro Valley. Depending on the season and local arrangements, you may have an opportunity to meet a local family and experience aspects of traditional Bhutanese hospitality.
Late Afternoon: Optional Traditional Hot-Stone Bath
After a rewarding day of hiking and sightseeing, return toward your resort. If you'd like to experience one of Bhutan's traditional forms of relaxation, enjoy an optional Bhutanese hot-stone bath.
Heated river stones are placed into a traditional wooden bath chamber, warming the water naturally. The experience is a relaxing way to soothe tired muscles after the Tiger's Nest hike while enjoying a distinctly Bhutanese wellness tradition.
Evening: Farewell Dinner in Paro
Return to Khangkhu Resort and enjoy your final evening in the beautiful Paro Valley. Over dinner, reflect on the highlights of your journey, from the cultural treasures of Thimphu to the Himalayan landscapes and sacred monasteries of Paro.
