Trip Introduction

A Bhutan trip that pairs the classic sights of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Phobjikha with a 3-day trek through Bumthang, the country's spiritual heartland. You camp two nights at Ngang Yul and Tahung, cross Phephe La Pass (3,360 m) and finish at Ogyen Choling. The trip closes with the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro. Welcome to Bhutan

Morning: Arrival & First Impressions of the Dragon Kingdom

Kuzuzangpo La! Welcome to Bhutan!

Your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey begins with a spectacular flight into Paro International Airport, where, weather permitting, you may enjoy sweeping views of the Himalayan mountains before descending into the beautiful Paro Valley.

After completing immigration formalities, meet your local Bhutanese guide and driver for a warm welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon. From the airport, drive a short distance up the valley to the Paro Airport Bird’s Eye View Point. From this elevated vantage point, enjoy panoramic views across the terraced Paro Valley, with the airport runway dramatically positioned between forested mountains and traditional settlements.

Today provides a gentle introduction to Bhutan’s landscape, history, and culture before your journey continues east toward central Bhutan and the three-day Bumthang Trek.

Afternoon: Cultural Exploration & Traditional Lunch

Enjoy your first Bhutanese lunch at a local restaurant in Paro, with an opportunity to sample traditional dishes such as Ema Datshi, Bhutan’s famous chili-and-cheese dish.

After lunch, visit Ta Dzong, a historic watchtower built above Paro Rinpung Dzong and now home to the National Museum of Bhutan. Its extensive collections of religious art, traditional costumes, historic artifacts, thangkas, weapons, stamps, and natural history exhibits provide valuable insight into Bhutanese heritage, an excellent cultural introduction before your Bumthang Trekking Tour takes you deeper into the country.

From the museum, follow the hillside path downhill to Rinpung Dzong, meaning the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels.” This impressive fortress-monastery is one of Paro Valley’s architectural landmarks and continues to serve both monastic and administrative functions. Explore its courtyards and exterior architectural details before descending toward the Paro Chhu and crossing the traditional wooden cantilever bridge below the dzong.

Cultural & Dress Code Etiquette: When visiting dzongs, monasteries, temples, and other sacred sites in Bhutan, please dress respectfully. Wear clothing that covers the shoulders and legs; long pants, long skirts or dresses, and shirts with appropriate coverage are recommended. Hats and other headwear should be removed when entering temples and sacred spaces. Photography is generally not permitted inside temple sanctuaries and shrine rooms unless specifically allowed. When walking around chortens, prayer wheels, and other sacred structures, proceed clockwise.

Late Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Thimphu

After exploring Paro, begin the scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The approximately 50 km (31 miles) journey follows the Paro Chhu downstream before joining the Wang Chhu valley and climbing gradually toward Thimphu.

Along the way, watch the scenery transition from the broad agricultural landscapes of Paro to forested hillsides, riverside settlements, and the increasingly urban surroundings of the capital. The drive normally takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on road and traffic conditions.

Evening: Thimphu Stroll & Welcome Dinner

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check into your hotel and take some time to refresh after the day’s journey.

Later, enjoy a relaxed orientation walk through central Thimphu. Browse local handicraft stalls, observe everyday life along the capital’s streets, and see the city's well-known traffic officers directing vehicles at central intersections.

Your guide will also provide an overview of the journey ahead, from the cultural valleys of Punakha and Phobjikha to Bumthang, where the three-day, two-night camping section forms the trekking centerpiece of your Bumthang Cultural Trek.

Return to your hotel for dinner and a comfortable overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 2: Cultural Treasures & Vibrant Capital Life of Thimphu

Morning: Fresh Markets, Archery & Iconic Landmarks

Begin your morning with a visit to the Centenary Farmers Market along the Wang Chhu River, where farmers and vendors from different parts of Bhutan bring seasonal vegetables, fruits, local cheeses, dried chilies, spices, and other regional products. The colorful market offers an engaging glimpse into Bhutanese food traditions and everyday life.

If your visit falls on a weekend and an event is underway, stop at a nearby archery ground to watch Bhutan’s national sport in action. Archery in Bhutan is as much a social and cultural tradition as it is a competition, often accompanied by good-natured rivalry, songs, dances, and celebrations when an arrow strikes the target.

Continue uphill to Kuenselphodrang to visit the impressive Buddha Dordenma, one of Thimphu’s most recognizable landmarks. The 169-foot (51.5 m) bronze-and-gilded statue overlooks the capital and contains more than 100,000 smaller Buddha statues within its interior. From the expansive terrace, enjoy panoramic views across the Thimphu Valley and surrounding forested mountains.

Conclude the morning at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, commonly known as the Arts and Crafts School. Here, students train in Bhutan’s Zorig Chusum, or 13 traditional arts and crafts, which include painting, woodcarving, embroidery, sculpture, and other skills that have shaped Bhutanese artistic and architectural traditions for generations. The visit adds another layer of cultural understanding to your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey before you travel deeper into central Bhutan.

Afternoon: Immersive Heritage at Simply Bhutan

After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum designed to introduce visitors to Bhutan’s traditional rural lifestyle, customs, architecture, food, and performing arts.

Explore displays of traditional household objects and village architecture, try your hand at archery or Khuru (traditional darts), and, when available, sample Ara, a traditional locally produced alcoholic drink. Cultural demonstrations, folk songs, and dances provide a lively introduction to traditions that remain an important part of Bhutanese community life.

Insider's Pro Tip: For a memorable cultural experience and distinctive travel photographs, consider renting traditional Bhutanese attire at Simply Bhutan, a Gho for men or a Kira for women. Staff can assist with properly wearing the garments, giving you an opportunity to experience an important element of Bhutanese identity and dress.

Late Afternoon: Royal & Monastic Grandeur at Tashichho Dzong

Later in the afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong, the imposing fortress-monastery standing beside the Wang Chhu River. With its massive whitewashed walls, richly decorated timberwork, golden roofs, and spacious courtyards, the dzong is one of Thimphu’s most important architectural and institutional landmarks.

Tashichho Dzong houses the throne room and offices associated with Bhutan’s monarchy and government, while part of the complex serves Bhutan’s central monastic community. Explore the areas open to visitors and admire the intricate craftsmanship that characterizes traditional Bhutanese dzong architecture.

This combination of living traditions, religious heritage, and historic architecture provides valuable cultural context for the villages, monasteries, and rural landscapes you will encounter later during the Bumthang Cultural Trek.

Evening: Leisurely Stroll Through Central Thimphu

Conclude your sightseeing with a relaxed evening stroll through central Thimphu. Browse local shops and handicraft outlets, observe the rhythm of everyday life in Bhutan’s capital, or simply enjoy some free time before returning to your hotel.

Your guide can also use this time to discuss the journey ahead as your Bumthang Trekking Tour continues eastward through Punakha and Phobjikha before reaching the cultural heartland of Bumthang and the three-day trekking section.

Return to your hotel for dinner and your second overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 3: Scenic Drive Across Dochula Pass to the Warm Punakha Valley

Morning: Himalayan Panorama at Dochula Pass & Botanical Wonders

After breakfast, leave Thimphu and begin a scenic drive east toward the warmer Punakha Valley. The road climbs gradually through forests of pine, cedar, and rhododendron to Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,170 ft), the highest point of today’s journey.

At the pass, stop to explore the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in three concentric tiers overlooking the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, Dochula offers magnificent panoramic views of Bhutan’s snow-covered Himalayan peaks, providing one of the most memorable mountain vistas on your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey.

If traveling during the spring flowering season, continue to the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi, where forests of rhododendrons and other native Himalayan plants surround peaceful walking trails. Depending on the season and available time, enjoy a short nature walk through the park, an easy introduction to the changing vegetation and mountain environments you will encounter as the journey progresses toward the Bumthang Trek.

Afternoon: Resort Lunch & the Grandeur of Punakha Dzong

From the cool heights of Dochula, descend through increasingly lush vegetation into the warmer, subtropical Punakha Valley. Terraced fields, traditional farmhouses, and forested hillsides gradually replace the high-elevation landscapes of the pass.

Upon arrival, check into Zhingkham Resort, beautifully positioned on a hillside overlooking the Punakha Valley. Enjoy lunch at the resort while taking in the surrounding scenery before continuing your afternoon sightseeing.

After lunch, descend to the valley floor to visit magnificent Punakha Dzong, traditionally known as Pungthang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, or the “Palace of Great Happiness.” Built in the 17th century at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), the fortress is one of Bhutan’s most historically significant and visually impressive dzongs.

Cross the traditional wooden cantilever bridge and enter the massive fortress complex to explore its courtyards, elaborately carved timber balconies, religious artwork, and sacred halls open to visitors. Punakha Dzong also serves as the winter residence of Bhutan’s central monastic body.

Late Afternoon: Gentle Village Walk to Chimi Lhakhang

Later, continue to the village of Sopsokha for a gentle walk through agricultural fields and traditional settlements to Chimi Lhakhang, popularly known as the Fertility Temple.

The temple is associated with Drukpa Kunley, the unconventional 15th–16th-century Buddhist teacher affectionately known as the “Divine Madman.” Walk along easy rural paths bordered by rice fields and traditional farmhouses before making the short ascent to the temple.

This leisurely countryside walk adds a gentle active element to the day and provides an opportunity to experience rural Bhutan on foot before the three-day trekking section of your Bumthang Cultural Trek begins later in the journey.

Evening: Relax at Zhingkham Resort

Return to Zhingkham Resort after the day’s sightseeing and take time to relax in the peaceful surroundings of the Punakha Valley.

From the resort’s elevated setting, enjoy expansive views across the valley and toward Punakha Dzong. As daylight fades and the dzong is illuminated below, its whitewashed walls and golden roofs create a beautiful evening scene against the surrounding mountains.

Enjoy dinner at the resort and settle in for a comfortable overnight stay in Punakha.

Day 3 Summary

Maximum Altitude: Approx. 3,100 m (10,170 ft) – Dochula Pass

Overnight Altitude: Approx. 1,250 m (4,101 ft) – Punakha

Distance Traveled: Approx. 74 km (46 miles), excluding local sightseeing transfers

Gentle countryside walk through Sopsokha to Chimi Lhakhang

Evening views of illuminated Punakha Dzong

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Zhingkham Resort, Punakha

Insider's Pro Tip: Today brings one of the most noticeable temperature changes of the journey. You will travel from the cool mountain air of Dochula Pass at 3,100 m (10,170 ft) to the much warmer Punakha Valley at approximately 1,250 m (4,101 ft). Keep a warm jacket easily accessible for Dochula, with lighter, breathable layers underneath for your afternoon sightseeing and walk to Chimi Lhakhang.

Day 4: Journey to the Glacial Phobjikha Valley & Gangtey Nature Trail

Morning: Mountain Drive to Phobjikha Valley

After breakfast, leave the warm Punakha Valley and begin a scenic drive toward Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful high-altitude landscapes. The road climbs steadily through changing vegetation and mountain scenery as you travel deeper into central Bhutan.

Cross Lawala Pass (approx. 3,250 m / 10,663 ft), where forests and highland vegetation frame the surrounding mountains. From the pass, descend toward the broad, U-shaped glacial landscape of Phobjikha, a peaceful valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains.

Often referred to as Gangtey after its prominent monastery, Phobjikha is characterized by open meadows, forested ridges, scattered farmhouses, and extensive wetlands. The transition from subtropical Punakha to this cool alpine environment provides another glimpse of the remarkably varied landscapes encountered on your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey.

Afternoon: Gangtey Goemba & Gangtey Nature Trail

Upon reaching the valley, visit Gangtey Goemba, an important Nyingma Buddhist monastery dramatically positioned on a forested ridge overlooking Phobjikha. Explore the monastery complex and take in expansive views across the valley before beginning one of the most enjoyable short walks of the tour.

From the monastery area, set out on the Gangtey Nature Trail, an easy and scenic walk descending through open meadows, traditional settlements, and peaceful forest. The trail passes near Semchubara Village before entering beautiful stands of blue pine and continuing toward the valley floor.

Along the way, pause to appreciate the quiet rural scenery, traditional farmhouses, grazing fields, and sweeping views across the glacial valley. The walk generally takes about 1½–2 hours, depending on pace and stops, and provides an excellent introduction to walking through Bhutan’s rural landscapes before the three-day Bumthang Trek later in the journey.

At the end of the walk, meet your driver and continue the short distance to your hotel. Check in, enjoy lunch, and take some time to relax amid the peaceful surroundings of Phobjikha.

Late Afternoon: Black-Necked Crane Conservation Center

Later in the afternoon, visit the Black-Necked Crane Conservation Center, where exhibits introduce the ecology of Phobjikha Valley and conservation efforts dedicated to protecting the endangered Black-necked Crane and its important winter habitat.

During the winter migration season, Black-necked Cranes arrive in Phobjikha from their breeding grounds on the Tibetan Plateau and other high-altitude regions to spend the colder months in the valley’s protected wetlands. When cranes are present, observation areas and telescopes provide opportunities to watch them without disturbing their natural habitat.

The birds hold special cultural significance for local communities, and their annual return is celebrated during the Black-Necked Crane Festival, traditionally held at Gangtey on November 11.

Evening: A Peaceful Alpine Evening

Return to your hotel and settle into the slower rhythm of Phobjikha Valley. As evening approaches, temperatures drop quickly, and the surrounding farms, forests, and open meadows become remarkably peaceful.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel and a relaxing evening in the cool mountain surroundings. Today’s easy nature walk and changing terrain provide a gentle introduction to the kind of rural landscapes and walking experiences that will become more prominent as your Bumthang Cultural Trek continues toward central Bhutan.

Insider's Pro Tip: Phobjikha Valley lies at approximately 2,900 m (9,514 ft) and is considerably cooler than Punakha, particularly in the early morning and after sunset. Keep a warm layer handy throughout your stay. Cold temperatures can also reduce camera and phone battery life, so fully charge your devices and carry a spare battery or power bank if you plan to take plenty of photographs.

Day 5: Scenic Journey to Bumthang & Historical Exploration of Trongsa Dzong

Morning: Across Pele La into Central Bhutan

After breakfast, bid farewell to the peaceful glacial landscape of Phobjikha and begin a spectacular overland journey deeper into central Bhutan. The road climbs through forests of pine, rhododendron, and high-mountain vegetation before joining the main east–west route toward Pele La Pass (3,420 m / 11,220 ft).

Traditionally regarded as one of the geographic gateways between western and central Bhutan, Pele La is marked by a large chorten and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind. Pause briefly at the pass to enjoy the crisp alpine surroundings and, when the weather is clear, distant views toward Bhutan’s higher Himalayan ranges.

From Pele La, descend through changing mountain landscapes, passing scattered settlements, forested slopes, and deep river valleys as the road eventually follows the dramatic Mangde Chhu Valley toward Trongsa.

The journey itself is one of today’s highlights, revealing the increasingly remote landscapes of central Bhutan as you make your way toward Bumthang and the trekking portion of your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey.

Afternoon: Trongsa Dzong & Journey Across Yotong La

Arriving in Trongsa, visit magnificent Trongsa Dzong, one of Bhutan’s largest and most historically significant fortress-monasteries. Strategically positioned along a steep ridge high above the Mangde Chhu gorge, the sprawling complex once controlled the principal east–west route through the kingdom.

Trongsa holds an important place in Bhutan’s royal history. Before becoming king, the first two monarchs of the Wangchuck dynasty served as Trongsa Penlop (governor), establishing a tradition closely linking Trongsa with the Bhutanese monarchy. Explore the interconnected courtyards, temples, passageways, massive whitewashed walls, and finely crafted timber architecture of this remarkable fortress.

After sightseeing, enjoy lunch in Trongsa before continuing east toward Bumthang.

The road climbs once again through dense forest to Yotong La Pass (3,425 m / 11,237 ft), the highest point of today’s journey. After a brief stop at the pass, descend toward the Chhume Valley, where the landscape gradually opens into pine-covered hills, agricultural fields, villages, and traditional farmhouses.

Continue through Chhume toward Jakar as you enter the wider valleys of Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland and the setting for the upcoming three-day Bumthang Trek.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Arrival in Bumthang

Arrive in the Bumthang Valley in the late afternoon and check into your lodge. After a long but rewarding journey across two major mountain passes, take time to relax, stretch your legs, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Bumthang is renowned for its concentration of ancient temples, monasteries, sacred sites, traditional villages, and landscapes associated with some of Bhutan’s most important Buddhist teachers and legends. Your time here combines cultural exploration with the three-day, two-night camping section that forms the trekking centerpiece of this Bumthang Cultural Trek.

Before dinner, your guide will provide a practical briefing for the trekking days ahead, covering the trail conditions, daily walking schedule, camping arrangements, luggage, and what to carry in your daypack.

Enjoy dinner at the lodge and settle in for your first night in Bumthang.

Insider's Pro Tip: Today is one of the longer overland journeys of the tour and crosses both Pele La and Yotong La at elevations above 3,400 m (11,150 ft). If you are susceptible to motion sickness, consider taking your usual medication before departing Phobjikha. Keep a warm layer within easy reach rather than packed in your main luggage, as temperatures at both passes can be considerably cooler than in the valleys.

Day 5 Summary

Maximum Altitude: Approx. 3,425 m (11,237 ft) – Yotong La Pass

Overnight Altitude: Approx. 2,800 m (9,186 ft) – Bumthang/Jakar

Day 6: Spiritual Exploration of Sacred Temples & Local Heritage in Bumthang

Morning: Ancient Temples & Living Monastic Traditions

Begin your day in Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, where ancient temples, monasteries, traditional villages, and sacred landscapes are woven into centuries of Buddhist history.

Start with a visit to Jambay Lhakhang (Jampay Lhakhang), one of Bhutan’s oldest Buddhist temples. Traditionally attributed to the 7th-century Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, this revered temple remains an important place of worship and pilgrimage. It is also the setting for the annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup, one of Bumthang’s best-known religious festivals, celebrated with sacred masked dances, rituals, and community gatherings.

Continue to Kurjey Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage sites. The temple complex is closely associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is believed to have meditated here in the 8th century and left an imprint of his body in the rock. Explore the sacred complex and its peaceful surroundings while learning about the legends that established Bumthang as one of Bhutan’s most significant centers of Buddhism.

Conclude the morning at Kharchu Dratsang, a prominent monastic complex overlooking the Bumthang Valley. Depending on the timing of your visit and the monastery’s daily schedule, you may have an opportunity to observe monks engaged in prayers, studies, or other aspects of monastic life.

Together, these sacred sites provide a deeper understanding of the religious traditions and cultural landscapes that distinguish the Bumthang Cultural Trekking experience from a purely wilderness-focused trek.

Afternoon: Tamshing Lhakhang, Local Cheese & Red Panda Brewery

After lunch, visit Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in the early 16th century by Pema Lingpa, one of Bhutan’s most revered Buddhist masters and treasure revealers. The temple preserves important religious artwork and historic wall paintings associated with the Pema Lingpa tradition, making it an especially meaningful stop for understanding Bumthang’s artistic and spiritual heritage.

After exploring Bumthang’s ancient religious traditions, discover a very different chapter of the valley’s history with a visit to the local Swiss Cheese Farm and Red Panda Brewery. The development of Swiss-style cheese and other food products in Bumthang grew from Swiss-supported agricultural initiatives that helped introduce new dairy-processing techniques to the region.

Depending on current operations and availability, learn about local cheese production and sample some of the products made in the valley. You may also visit the nearby brewery associated with Red Panda Weissbier, a locally produced wheat beer.

If time permits, explore local shops or workshops displaying Yathra, the distinctive woolen textile traditionally woven in the Bumthang region. Characterized by colorful geometric patterns, Yathra is used to make jackets, bags, blankets, table runners, and other practical and decorative items.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Final Preparation for the Bumthang Trek

Return to your lodge in the late afternoon and prepare for tomorrow’s departure on the three-day trekking section of your journey.

Organize your daypack, review your clothing and personal equipment, and meet with your guide for a final trail briefing. Your guide will explain the following day’s route, expected walking conditions, camping arrangements, luggage handling, and the essential items you should carry with you during the day.

Tomorrow marks the transition from hotel-based cultural touring to the three-day, two-night camping section of your Bumthang Trek, giving you an opportunity to experience the quieter rural trails, forests, villages, and cultural landscapes of central Bhutan on foot.

Enjoy dinner at the lodge and a comfortable final night at your Bumthang hotel before beginning the Bumthang Cultural Trek the following morning.

Insider's Pro Tip: At Tamshing Lhakhang, ask your guide whether the historic iron chain-mail associated with Pema Lingpa is available to see during your visit. Local tradition holds that pilgrims may carry the heavy chain mail around the temple as an act of spiritual purification. Access and participation can depend on temple circumstances, so follow the guidance of the resident monks and your local guide.

Day 7: Start of Trek – Jakar to Ngang Yul & Ngang Lhakhang

Morning: Begin the Bumthang Cultural Trekking Adventure

After an early breakfast at your lodge, meet your trekking crew and take a short drive from Jakar to the trailhead. With your daypack ready and the camping equipment organized by the crew, set out on foot for the first day of your three-day Bumthang Cultural Trekking adventure.

The trail begins at a comfortable pace, following the beautiful Chamkhar Chhu through the Bumthang countryside. Walk beside the clear mountain river and through a changing landscape of pine forest, open meadows, cultivated fields, and scattered traditional farmhouses.

With relatively gentle terrain and modest elevation gain, today provides an excellent introduction to the Bumthang Trek. Rather than dramatic high-altitude wilderness, the appeal of this route lies in its combination of peaceful walking, rural scenery, traditional settlements, and centuries-old Buddhist heritage.

Afternoon: Tangbi Mani & Journey into Ngang Yul

Around midday, reach the Tangbi Mani area and stop for a well-earned lunch prepared by your trekking crew. Depending on the day's arrangements and suitable stopping location, enjoy your meal amid the peaceful riverside and rural surroundings before continuing along the trail.

After lunch, resume your walk as the route gradually leads deeper into the countryside toward Ngang Yul, traditionally associated with the “Land of the Swan.” The trail continues through pastoral landscapes and scattered settlements, providing opportunities to observe everyday rural life away from Bhutan’s main roads and towns.

Continue toward Ngang Lhakhang, an important temple associated with the religious traditions and history of the Bumthang region. Set amid quiet fields and traditional farmhouses, the temple and surrounding valley provide a fitting destination for the first trekking day.

This close connection between walking, village life, sacred sites, and rural landscapes captures the character of the Bumthang Cultural Trek.

Late Afternoon & Evening: First Night at Ngang Lhakhang Camp

Arrive at your campsite near Ngang Lhakhang, at approximately 2,900 m (9,514 ft), and settle in for your first night under canvas.

While the trekking crew prepares camp, enjoy hot tea and snacks and take some time to relax after the day’s walk. You may wish to explore the immediate surroundings, photograph the peaceful valley, or simply enjoy the transition from hotel-based travel to a night in the Bhutanese countryside.

As evening settles over Ngang Yul, gather in the dining tent for a freshly prepared dinner. Away from the towns and hotels of the previous days, your first night of camping offers a quieter and more intimate experience of Bumthang’s rural landscape.

Rest well tonight, as tomorrow brings the most demanding and rewarding walking day of the Bumthang Trekking Tour, including the climb toward Phephe La.

Insider's Pro Tip: Today’s relatively gentle terrain makes it a good opportunity to settle into a comfortable trekking rhythm before tomorrow’s longer climb. Adjust your trekking poles, footwear, and layering system as needed, and keep rain protection, water, sunscreen, a warm layer, and your camera in your daypack rather than in the luggage carried by the trekking crew.

Day 7 Summary

Day 8: Crossing Phephe La Pass to the Tranquil Tang Valley

Morning: Ascent Through Forests to Phephe La Pass

Wake to the fresh mountain air of Ngang Yul and enjoy a warm breakfast prepared by your trekking crew. After packing your daypack, set out on the second and most challenging day of your Bumthang Cultural Trekking adventure.

Leaving the campsite behind, walk across open meadows before the trail begins a sustained climb toward Phephe La Pass (3,360 m / 11,023 ft), the highest point of the three-day trek. As you gain elevation, the path enters increasingly dense forest, winding through stands of bamboo, conifers, hemlock, and rhododendron.

The steady ascent is more demanding than yesterday’s walk, but the peaceful forest, cool mountain air, and gradual transition into higher terrain make this one of the most rewarding sections of the Bumthang Trekking route.

Eventually, prayer flags signal your arrival at Phephe La Pass. Take time to rest, catch your breath, and celebrate reaching the highest point of the trek before beginning the long descent toward the Tang Valley.

Afternoon: Descent into the Tang Valley

From Phephe La, begin descending through quiet mountain forest toward the broad landscapes of the Tang Valley. The character of the walk gradually changes as the trail loses elevation, eventually emerging from the forest into more open countryside.

Continue through a landscape of grazing areas, agricultural fields, scattered farmhouses, and small rural settlements. Depending on the pace of the group and the arrangements made by your trekking crew, stop at a suitable location along the trail for lunch and a well-earned rest.

The contrast between the forested heights of Phephe La and the pastoral landscapes of Tang is one of the highlights of today's Bumthang Cultural Trek, combining a genuine mountain crossing with close-up views of rural life in one of Bumthang’s most traditional valleys.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Arrival at Tahung Camp

Continue your descent toward Tahung, where the trekking crew will establish your second and final wilderness campsite at approximately 2,720 m (8,923 ft).

After arriving at camp, settle into your tent and give your legs a well-deserved rest. Enjoy hot tea and snacks while the crew prepares the evening meal, and take in the quiet countryside and changing light across the Tang Valley.

Tonight is your final night under canvas on the Bumthang Trek. Gather in the dining tent for a freshly prepared dinner and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley after completing the most demanding trekking day of the journey.

Insider's Pro Tip: Today includes both the principal climb of the trek and a substantial descent from Phephe La. Trekking poles are especially useful on downhill sections where forest trails may be uneven, muddy, or covered with roots and loose material. Keep rain protection and a warm layer in your daypack as mountain weather can change quickly around the pass.

Day 9: Final Trek Day – Tang Valley to Mebar Tsho & Drive to Jakar

Morning: Final Trek to Ogyen Choling

Wake to your final morning at camp and enjoy a hot breakfast prepared by the trekking crew. After packing your daypack and saying goodbye to your campsite near Tahung, set out on the third and final walking day of your Bumthang Cultural Trekking adventure.

Today’s trail is gentler than yesterday’s crossing of Phephe La, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful rural landscapes of the Tang Valley at a more relaxed pace. Follow trails through agricultural countryside, passing traditional farmhouses, cultivated fields, small settlements, and sections of the Tang Chhu as you make your way toward Ogyen Choling.

Your destination is Ogyen Choling, a historic estate situated above the upper Tang Valley. Once associated with an influential local family, the complex has been carefully preserved and today houses the Ogyen Choling Museum, offering an intimate look into the social, religious, and domestic history of rural Bhutan.

Explore the traditional buildings and museum collections, where displays of household objects, farming implements, textiles, religious artifacts, manuscripts, and other possessions help illustrate how generations of Bhutanese families lived and worked in this remote valley.

Reaching Ogyen Choling marks the completion of the walking portion of your three-day Bumthang Trek.

Afternoon: Tang Valley, Mebar Tsho & Return to Jakar

After completing the trek, enjoy lunch in the Tang Valley before meeting your vehicle for the drive back toward Jakar.

Along the way, stop at Mebar Tsho, or the “Burning Lake,” one of Bumthang’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Despite its name, Mebar Tsho is not a lake but a sacred pool in a rocky gorge along the Tang Chhu.

According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, the great treasure revealer Pema Lingpa entered the water here carrying a burning butter lamp and later emerged with sacred treasures while the lamp was still burning. The event gave the site its name and established Mebar Tsho as an important place of pilgrimage.

Walk carefully to the designated viewing area, where colorful prayer flags, forested slopes, rushing water, and the narrow rocky gorge create a powerful atmosphere.

After your visit, continue by road to Jakar, returning to the comforts of your lodge after two nights of camping. The drive through the Tang Valley completes the transition from the trekking portion of your Bumthang Cultural Trek back to the hotel-based cultural journey.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Return to Comfort & Celebration Dinner

Upon arrival in Jakar, check back into your lodge and enjoy a well-earned hot shower and some time to relax after three days on the trail.

If time and energy permit, take a leisurely stroll around Jakar or simply unwind at the lodge and enjoy the comforts of the Bumthang Valley.

In the evening, celebrate the successful completion of your three-day Bumthang Trekking experience with dinner at the lodge. It is a fitting conclusion to three rewarding days of walking through forests, mountain passes, traditional settlements, sacred landscapes, and the rural valleys of central Bhutan.

Insider's Pro Tip: Mebar Tsho is both a sacred pilgrimage site and a rugged natural gorge. Paths and steps around the viewing area can be uneven and slippery, particularly after rain. Remain on designated paths and viewing areas, follow your guide’s instructions, and avoid approaching wet rocks or the fast-moving water along the gorge.

Board the short but spectacular flight west across Bhutan’s mountainous interior. Weather permitting, enjoy aerial views of forested ridges, deep river valleys, remote settlements, and the dramatic Himalayan landscape as you retrace by air much of the country you previously crossed overland.

After several days exploring Bumthang’s sacred temples, rural valleys, and mountain trails, the flight offers a memorable new perspective on the landscapes that have shaped your Bumthang Cultural Trekking journey.

Domestic flights in Bhutan are weather-dependent, and schedules can occasionally change, so today’s sightseeing program will remain flexible according to the actual flight schedule.

Afternoon: Dungtse Lhakhang & Paro Valley

Upon landing at Paro International Airport, meet your driver and transfer to your hotel. Check in, refresh, and enjoy lunch before setting out for a relaxed afternoon of sightseeing.

Visit Dungtse Lhakhang, an unusual chorten-shaped Buddhist temple built in the 15th century by Thangtong Gyalpo, the celebrated Tibetan Buddhist master, architect, and iron-bridge builder.

The temple’s distinctive multi-level design represents different realms of Buddhist cosmology, while its interior preserves an important collection of religious paintings and murals. Subject to access restrictions, explore the temple with your guide and learn about the symbolism incorporated into its architecture and sacred artwork.

After the more physically active days of your Bumthang Trek, today is intentionally kept at a relaxed pace, giving you time to recover before tomorrow’s hike to one of Bhutan’s most celebrated pilgrimage sites.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Paro Town & Preparation for Tiger’s Nest

Later in the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Paro town, browsing traditional shops, handicraft outlets, and small local businesses. This is a convenient opportunity to look for Bhutanese souvenirs such as handwoven textiles, handicrafts, prayer flags, locally produced teas, or other gifts before the end of your journey.

Return to your hotel in the early evening and prepare for tomorrow’s hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). Your guide will review the expected walking time, trail conditions, recommended clothing, water requirements, and departure time so you can organize your daypack in advance.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel and a restful evening in Paro after completing the cultural and trekking experiences of your Bumthang Cultural Trek.

Insider's Pro Tip: The Bumthang–Paro flight is short and highly scenic when skies are clear, but mountain weather can affect both departure times and visibility. Keep essential medication, travel documents, valuables, and a warm layer in your carry-on rather than your checked baggage. For the best available mountain views, ask the airline staff which side of the aircraft is preferable when checking in, as the most favorable views can depend on the day’s flight path and weather conditions.

Day 11: Iconic Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest)

Morning: Pilgrimage Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)

After an early breakfast, set out for the final major hiking experience of your journey, the pilgrimage to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Bhutan’s most iconic sacred site. Dramatically built into a sheer cliff above the Paro Valley, the monastery appears almost suspended between the forested mountains and the sky.

Begin the hike from the trailhead and climb steadily through forests of blue pine and rhododendron, passing prayer flags, prayer wheels, and occasional viewpoints along the way. The trail gains elevation gradually as you make your way toward the monastery.

Around the halfway point, stop at the Taktsang Cafeteria viewpoint for a rest and refreshments. From here, enjoy your first dramatic close-up view of Tiger’s Nest clinging to the opposite cliff face.

Continue uphill through the forest to the principal viewpoint, where one of Bhutan’s most celebrated panoramas unfolds across the gorge. From here, descend a series of stone steps, pass beside a waterfall, cross the bridge spanning the ravine, and make the final ascent into the monastery complex.

According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) arrived at this sacred site in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here, establishing Taktsang as an important place of pilgrimage. Explore the temples and sacred spaces open to visitors while your guide explains the legends, religious symbolism, and history associated with the monastery.

After three days of trekking through Bumthang and several shorter nature and cultural walks along the journey, reaching Tiger’s Nest provides a memorable active and spiritual finale to your Bumthang Cultural Trekking tour.

Afternoon: Farmhouse Lunch & Traditional Hot Stone Bath

After visiting the monastery, retrace the trail through the forest and descend to the trailhead, where your vehicle will be waiting.

Enjoy a well-earned lunch at a local restaurant or traditional farmhouse before taking time to relax after the morning’s hike.

If included in your arrangements, experience a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho). Traditionally, river stones are heated over a wood fire and carefully placed into a separate section of a wooden bath, warming the water. Local herbs such as Artemisia may also be added.

Soaking in the warm bath offers a relaxing way to unwind after the Tiger’s Nest hike and the many walking experiences of your Bumthang Cultural Trek journey.

Evening: Final Evening in Paro & Farewell Dinner

Spend your final evening enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Paro. Depending on your interests and available time, take another leisurely walk through town, browse local handicraft shops, or pick up any last-minute souvenirs and gifts.

Later, return to your hotel for a farewell dinner, reflecting on a journey that has taken you from Paro and Thimphu across the mountain passes to Punakha and Phobjikha, onward into the spiritual heartland of Bumthang, and across the three-day Bumthang Trek before returning to Paro.

Your final hike to Tiger’s Nest brings together many of the elements that define this journey, mountain scenery, active exploration, Buddhist heritage, and Bhutan’s living cultural traditions.

Insider's Pro Tip: An early start for Tiger’s Nest is highly recommended. Beginning around 7:00 AM, depending on seasonal opening arrangements and your guide’s advice, generally allows you to walk during the cooler part of the day and gives you plenty of time to complete the hike at a comfortable pace. Carry water, sun protection, a light rain layer, and a warm layer in your daypack, and wear sturdy walking shoes with good traction.
